Some places and moments connect people forever, and for ORIONS BELTE, one of those moments sparked a lasting creative bond. When Øyvind, Chris, and Kim first met to work on ideas, they ended up recording their entire debut album in a single weekend. Using the band as a platform to explore what an instrumental group can be, they've released everything from solo albums and live recordings in Norway’s nature to eccentric cover EPs and immersive studio albums. Their strong connection fuels music that feels natural and authentic, built on melodies and grooves that resonate with fans worldwide. As Atwood Magazine describes, their sound is “an eclectic fusion of disparate styles and exciting sounds”, blending memorable melodies, ambient drones, and wicked guitar riffs.

WITCH (Zambia)

STROM

WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc) were the biggest rock band in Zambia in the 1970s and spearheaded a new genre dubbed Zamrock, fusing influences that ranged from the Rolling Stones to Black Sabbath and James Brown and mixing them with traditional African rhythms and bush village songs. At t the peak of their popularity, the band often needed police to keep fans at bay while their lead singer Jagari - whose name is an Africanisation of Mick Jagger’s - riled up crowds by stage diving from balconies and dancing manically as the WITCH’s blend of psychedelic rock and African rhythms permeated the surrounding atmosphere.

Jagari is the charismatic sole surviving original member of the band. As Zambia’s economy stagnated and the country buckled under the AIDS crisis, WITCH fell apart. Jagari retreated to a life of quasi-anonymity as a university music professor before being wrongfully arrested during Zambia’s toughest hour. Now a man in his 60s, he spends his time mining gemstones hoping to strike it rich, until very recently the band being just a nostalgic memory of his youth.

Largely unknown outside of their home country, WITCH finally got the exposure they deserved when Now Again Records reissued their entire discography in 2012. This allowed Jagari to play outside Africa for the first time and for a new generation of fans to discover his music. In 2016 he began a collaboration with Dutch musicians Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskoviç, and together with them, in September 2017 WITCH headed out on its extremely successful first-ever European Tour. In the Fall of 2019, WITCH embarked on their first North American tour. They return to the states including this show at The Drake on 10/9 following the screening of the documentary at the Amherst Cinema on 9/7.

Here’s some appreciation and love for everything that’s happening right now! We won the APPLAUS Award 2024! This is an important milestone for us and our cultural endeavor over the past seven (yes, seven!) years. It’s also a big motivation to keep going. You must know—it’s not a given that we’re still here doing this. Every year is a challenge, and there are moments when we’re close to giving up. The financial struggle is very real, and we constantly find ourselves torn between keeping subculture affordable and securing enough support to keep us afloat. They wrote most of it on the road, energised by the sounds they discovered as they magpied instruments during their travels—Turkish clarinet, santour, oud, gangsa, zither, harpsichord, and on and on. They cut most of the tracks in London during brief breaks, longtime drummer Theo Guttenplan and double bassist David Richardson joining a panoply of horn, string, and percussion players. And during a year off from the road, where K. and Merve could concentrate on making sure the pieces moved together, they decamped to the French countryside for two weeks, leaving the distractions and moodiness of home. They captured vocals for 14 songs there in only half that time. Both Kit Sebastian’s busy touring schedule and subsequent break from it allowed Merve to step fully into these songs and their ever-shifting shapes, her confidence and versatility rising in tandem. Behind the Green Door & Grotto Terrazza present 🩸MINAMI DEUTSCH🩸 Motorik Beat / Kraut Rock (Japan) Everyone has their own imagination about outer space, and each one of us gets to daydream about what exactly floats or exists there. ‘Fortune Goodies’ is @minamideutsch ’s long-awaited 3rd studio album and an encyclopaedia of Krautrock, as band leader Kyotaro Miula describes it. While not all the songs on the record function as straightforward Krautrock this time around, they still manage to capture the spirit and heart of the genre. After relocating from Tokyo to Berlin, Miula’s musical vocabulary has greatly expanded, thus resulting in this ultimate Japanese take on cosmic music in 2022. Minami Deutsch is a Krautrock band from Tokyo. Formed by Kyotaro Miula in 2014, they got their start playing live music on the busy streets of Tokyo. This lead to their participation in Krautrock Night, a party hosted by Tokyo Psych Fest, and later a tour of Taiwan. In September, 2015, they released their first record through the English cult label Cardinal Fuzz Records. They are now part of the Japanese record label @gurugurubrain. Stripped back to the absolute essentials, each song locks squarely in the groove and begins unfurling its color-soaked fractals. There is not a single bum vibe, yet it’s made by human hands and not by machines. It’s how each song breathes and how it grows in the soil that frees it from the cold, mechanical “motorik” stereotype. Next on 14 July 2022: 🌓FÖLLAKZOID🌒 Santiago, Chile // Chilean Krautrock @domingaedomingae is a Chilean musician and filmmaker living in Mexico City; she founded her band @follakzoid in 2007 and has since been touring and releasing some of the most mind bending music with the renowned Sacred Bones record labels. Heavily informed by the heritage of the ancient music of the Andes, the band has learned to integrate their origins with contemporary sounds and technologies of our times, creating a rich yet minimal electronic-organic atmosphere. ‘I’ will be their fourth full-length release and third for Sacred Bones, following 2015’s ‘III’, 2013’s ‘II’ and 2009’s eponymous debut. Föllakzoid grows via depuration, aiming with each record to fill longer spaces of time with fewer and fewer elements. Generally they consist of five individual musicians with various tastes and backgrounds, that enjoy their differences and don't worry too much about the outcome. Their second project "Cosmic Blunder" originated out of the urge to merge new psychedelic sounds with elements of funk, jazz and surf rock, while keeping the stuff that worked on the first record in place. The result is a reverb soaked ride through songs that cover the ups and downs of life and all the questions that come along with it.
